Volkswagenball 

American sculptor Lars-Erik Fisk has captivated the art world with his round sculptures, or spheres, made from everyday objects. ‘Volkswagenball’ at Gelderlandplein is one of his masterpieces which in 2002 won him the Rappaport Prize for contemporary artists. The artist, who was born in 1970, challenges the boundaries of traditional sculpture with his unconventional works.

For his work ‘Volkswagenball’, Fisk transformed an iconic 1960s Volkswagen van into a ball, complete with part of the front, one seat, steering wheel, headlights, and instantly-recognisable Volkswagen logo. Not only is ‘Volkswagenball’ a visual spectacle, it encourages self-reflection and forces you to think about consumerism, mobility, and the role of cars in our society.

With his spheres, Fisk wants to stimulate you to think about the symbolism of ordinary objects. By simplifying the object, distilling it into an abstract symbol, the question arises as to what the true essence of the object is. Fisk’s work powerfully captivates the imagination and inspires you to view the world around you with a different perspective.
